Visa gift cards are like prepaid credit cards. You can purchase one for yourself or, as the name suggests, for a gift. These cards come preloaded with an amount of money and usually can be refilled, too. These cards can be used at all retailers that accept credit cards with the Visa logo. However, only some gift cards can be used to withdraw cash from ATMs.

Things You'll Need
  • Visa gift card
  • PIN, or personal identification number

Instructions

  • 1. Review the terms and conditions that came with the Visa gift card. If you cannot find a contract or set of rules, call the toll-free number on the back of the Visa gift card. Ask if you can use your card at an ATM or banking center to withdraw cash.

  • 2. Look for the Cirrus or Interlink logo on the back of the card. These insignias indicate that you can indeed use your card at an ATM.

  • 3. Contact the banking institution on which the funds are drawn. Visa gift cards are sold by a wide variety of retailers and banks. You need to get a PIN, or personal identification number, to access cash at an ATM. A toll-free number should be listed on the back of the card.

  • 4. Wait for the PIN to arrive. It normally takes between five and seven business days. These numbers are only sent through the mail. They cannot be assigned over the phone, as they must be computer-generated.

  • 5. Look at the rules for ATM withdrawals on the contract, or contact a representative. Some Visa gift cards charge high transaction fees, sometimes as much as $3.50 per withdrawal, as of 2010. Also, make sure you use an ATM that will accept the gift card; look for the Cirrus logo.
