Why Sell Gift Cards?

By Bruce Wayne on May 18, 2010

Why would anybody sell gift cards? Does it mean that the seller is ungrateful or unappreciative of the gift? Probably not. There can be many reasons for a person to sell gift cards.

One reason might be that the gift card was issued by a store or merchant that is not located near enough for convenient redemption. Many times a store might not have a branch location in the receiver's hometown.

A second reason might be that the nearest redemption site is located too far away. Work schedules, weather conditions or even the price of gasoline could make traveling the distance not agreeable.

Another reason could be that the gift card was given a long time ago and the receiver is not interested in making the effort or is just too busy to use the card. Enthusiasm for gifts can wax and wane. Especially in the case of children whose interest can fluctuate wildly depending on what they see on television or what their friends talk about in school.

A fourth reason may be that the items available at the particular store are not interesting or attractive. Everyone has his or her own preferences or favorite stores. Having a gift card for a store that one never patronizes is not a very inspiring or compelling gift.

A final reason to sell gift cards is that the receiver needs the money represented by the card much more than an item from the store. Especially is difficult economic times money is much more useful than more "stuff."

A fortunate situation for people who want to sell their cards is that it is quite easy to do. There are quite a number of sites on the internet that provide an opportunity for people to sell their cards. There are just a few easy steps to follow.

First, an internet search needs to done using the search words sell gift cards. With those words the search engines will produce lots of sites that sell the cards themselves or that offer help for anyone wanting to sell cards.

Next, the sites need to be compared. The sites all have their own rules and costs for selling the cards. Most sites will offer between 60 – 90% of the value of the card. Some sites may also have additional fees for listing the card.

Then the manner of receiving the proceeds of the sale have to be understood. Some sites will send a check or others may offer an exchange for a more desirable gift card. Still others may offer a card that can be used at another site for immediate money.

Unwanted gift cards don't have to be considered a waste or a burden. They do have value and as such can be used to obtain something that the receiver wants. Gift givers always want to know that their gifts are appreciated and useful. One way to make sure of that is to sell the gift cards and use the value of the cards, if not the cards themselves, for a necessary item.
