How to Save Money With Teacher Discounts

By eHow Contributor , last updated August 22, 2014 Found This Helpful

Many retail and recreation outlets offer discounts for teachers. In some cases, the discount is intended to help teachers who spend their own money on educational supplies. In other cases, the discount just recognizes the value of teaching and is intended to be an award. There are several online sites that keep up with the discounts available and how a teacher can qualify for them.

Instructions

  • 1. You will need to prove you are an active teacher to get any discount. Present your teacher identification card, or a check stub from a local school. In some stores, this will be enough to get a discount card good for the entire school year.

  • 2. Present a tax-exempt form at the store if you want to avoid sales tax (this is not an option in all states). The form must include the school's tax ID number. The form is available in school or district offices.

  • 3. Check stores for discount deals. Most major bookstores offer a teacher discount card. As of 2011, Borders and Barnes & Noble's card was worth 20 percent off any purchase.

  • 4. Hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes offered no sales tax with tax exempt paperwork as of 2011. Lowes also had free services such as cutting wood and pipe. This is especially handy for school craft projects like making sets for theater productions.

  • 5. Office Max, Office Depot and Staples all had special cards for teachers as of 2011. For example, teachers classroom buying supplies at Office Depot and Staples could get 10 percent back in rewards points. Craft stores like Joann Fabric and Michael's also had special savings programs for teachers.

  • 6. Some stores offer special "Educator Days" a few times a year. Big Lots, for example, had a 10 percent deal before the start of the school year. Sign up for email notices at any stores with similar deals.
