There are a variety of reasons to have a credit card associated with your PayPal account. The card can be a source of backup in case you don't have sufficient funds for a purchase, be a way to raise your spending limit or be a way of confirming your address. Adding a credit card to your PayPal account can also significantly increase your protection in case of a dispute, as funds may be protected by the credit card company as well as by PayPal. Things You'll Need

  • Credit card
  • PayPal account

Instructions

Add a Credit Card to a PayPal Account

  • 1. Have the credit card you want to add to your PayPal account readily available. You can also add any debit card that has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it.

  • 2. Log in to your PayPal account using your email address and password. This will bring you to the "My Account Overview" page.

  • 3. Click the "Edit Profile" link, located next to your name and email address under the page title. This will bring you to the "Profile Summary" page.

  • 4. Look at the three columns on the summary page and find the hyperlink that says "Credit/Debit Cards" in the "Financial Information" column. Click on that link. You will be brought to a page that shows you a summary of the credit and debit cards you have associated with your PayPal account.

  • 5. Remove any credit or debit cards that you no longer wish to have attached to your account by clicking on the circle next to the description of the card and then hitting the remove button.

  • 6. Find the "Add New Card" icon, located near your credit or debit card information.

  • 7. Click the button and fill in all the requested information, making sure that the billing information is correct. If the billing information is different than that of the cards you already have on your PayPal account, be certain to use the "Enter New Address as Billing Address" button.

  • 8. Hit the "Add Card" button. You will be redirected to the "Credit/Debit Cards" page, at which time you can make the new card your primary source of funding or just leave it as a secondary card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be aware that you may have a lower-than-usual spending limit unless your account is verified. The typical limit is $2, 000 per day.

  • If you have more than one PayPal account, a particular credit card can only be associated with one of the accounts.
