Mobile Gift Cards Catching On

By AJ Byrum on December 09, 2011

First there was mobile credit card processing, freeing up merchants to accept credit cards by smartphone and mobile device wherever and whenever the opportunity arises. Now, mobile gift cards have come on the scene, freeing up shoppers from having to carry the ubiquitous plastic versions around everywhere for fear of not having them when they're needed. Talk about uber convenience!

You may have already observed the mobile gift card phenomenon at Starbucks, who earlier this year lead the way in adopting what has been dubbed the "cooler, more sophisticated and smarter cousin to the gift card." In fact, Starbucks claims that within nine weeks of the national launch of mobile payment its customers had paid more than 3 million times using its app.

Mobile gift cards work fairly simply for high tech. They can be sent by email, text or Facebook to the recipient, who can redeem it in one of three ways: by having a merchant directly scan the bar code on their phone, by printing it out or by inputting the gift card number at a POS terminal or on a website.

Other national retailers have begun to ride the mobile gift card wave, including Applebee's, California Pizza Kitchen and Target. No doubt more will soon follow, intent on cashing in on a trend that's sure to catch on with many of the Smartphone Generation.

Website CreditCards.com offers this list of actual or potential benefits of mobile gift cards:

  • Ditch that plastic. Clear all those so-last-year plastic gift cards out of your wallet and travel a little lighter.
  • Pitch the punch cards. (Honestly, does anyone still use them?)
  • Breakage no more. Here, the term "breakage" refers to gift cards that are lost or partially or completely unused. That's money in the issuing merchant's pocket. When the card's on your mobile phone or device, it's harder to lose or forget and you'll get full bang for your buck.
  • Convenience and accessibility. For people who always carry their smartphone (and who doesn't?), the mobile gift card is readily available for use at a moment's notice.
  • Personalization perks. The gifter can personalize the mobile gift card with their own message, video or pic, depending on how the card is set up by the issuer.
  • Opt in for special offers. Merchants could extend special offers directly to smartphone owners to draw them in.
  • Use it as a budgeting tool. For example, if you pick up coffee at the same shop on a regular basis, load your mobile gift card with a set amount of money to get you through a specific time period without busting the bank.
  • Security. Mobile gift cards are on a password-protected network, so no one else can access them if you lose your phone. Better yet, store them in the cloud and there's no risk of loss at all.
